How to fix the STOP: 0xC000021A or STATUS_SYSTEM_PROCESS_TERMINATED error

Stop errors (blue screen) in Windows

Stop errors (also called blue screen errors or blue screen of death errors) are the most severe errors Windows can encounter. They occur if a serious problem causes your Windows system to shut down or restart unexpectedly. You might see a message that says "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer".

These errors can be caused by both hardware and software issues, and it can be difficult to troubleshoot the problem. In reality, the most common cause of blue screen errors is a device driver problem. Outdated, incorrect or corrupt drivers can cause the system to encounter a Stop error. You can use a driver update program to check, find, download and update all device drivers automatically.

The following tools and methods can also help you get Windows up and running again.

The STATUS_SYSTEM_PROCESS_TERMINATED bug check has a value of 0xC000021A. This means that an error has occurred in a crucial user-mode subsystem.

The STOP: 0xC000021A message occurs when Windows switches into kernel mode and a user-mode subsystem, such as Winlogon or the Client Server Runtime Subsystem (CSRSS), is compromised, and security can no longer be guaranteed. Because Windows cannot run without Winlogon or CSRSS, this is one of the few situations in which the failure of a user-mode service can cause the system to stop responding. You cannot use the kernel debugger in this situation, because the error occurred in a user-mode process.

Fix the STATUS SYSTEM PROCESS TERMINATED error

The following suggestions can help you resolve the STATUS SYSTEM PROCESS TERMINATED error:

This Stop error occurs in a user-mode process. The most common causes are third-party applications. If the error occurs after you install a new or updated device driver, system service, or third-party application, you need to disable, remove, or roll back the driver, or uninstall the new software. If this does not resolve the problem, contact the hardware manufacturer for updates. Using updated drivers and software is especially important for backup programs, multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, DVD playback, and CD mastering tools.

In most cases the STATUS SYSTEM PROCESS TERMINATED error can be solved by updating the drivers for the device causing the error. Also make sure you update your Windows and antivirus software, as some of these errors are not caused by hardware, but software problems. You can use the Windows device manager to uninstall any currently installed driver for the device and reinstall the latest driver. When you reboot your PC after uninstalling the drivers, Windows will detect the new hardware, which allows you to install manually the latest drivers for the device.

If you do not have the drivers for the device in error, or are not comfortable in using the Windows device manager, you can also use a driver update program to find, download and update all device drivers for you. Driver update software will accurately identify your hardware, including the device in error, and automatically install the latest drivers for it. This can solve easily STATUS SYSTEM PROCESS TERMINATED errors.
